PHNTM Out Of Africa Great Stuff Recordings New York techno legend Bryan Cox dons his PHNTM guise once again for the latest slice of Great Stuff, returning to the imprint after his 2011 collaboration with Christian Cambas, Inferno. With releases on imprints like Toolroom, 1605 Music Therapy, Blu Fin and Hotfingers, his alter-ego has been blazing a trail through the world of new skool tech in recent years. Out Of Africa falls just the right side of moody, with its brooding, dramatic tones and bombastic tribal percussion.
With plenty of chunk for your Euro, it layers percussion in thick layers, driven by droning atonal bass and unrelenting rhythm. Ominous horns sound at key moments of tension during the track, creating a dramatic slab of dancefloor gold. On the flip, Njabulo is phatter still, with a plump arpeggiated bassline chugging away beneath snappy beats and powerful but never-OTT builds raising the energy further. Little flecks of tribalism pepper the groove, and rousing drum fills punctuate the track’s progression. It’s a taut, meaty track that’s executed with expert finesse.
