Shenoda – Letters From The B.A.G EP
[Hypercolour]
It’s always nice to welcome back our nearest and dearest, and Shenoda was there when we kicked things off back in 2007, taking the third release on Hypercolour and becoming an integral part of our musical family. Along the way, Laurie has racked up some great releases on Fear Of Flying, our own sister label Losing Suki, Defected (a collaboration with Huxley) and most recently and an EP for George Fitzgerald’s Man Make Music imprint.
On ‘Thinking Of’, Shenoda goes for a chugging slow groove and some chopped up vox, but it’s some trademark techno licks that work it’s way into the cut, all spacey synths and distorted bass, picking up the pace with some rolling hat work. ‘Bad Moyles’ is a playful house jam, soaked in just the right amount of reverb as the claps and rims hit precision hard and a Todd Terry-esque stab plays out the melody. Proper house tackle, right here.
Wrapping up the EP is ‘You Can Tell’, sparse beats and moody bass set the rather murky tone here, making it a very cool slice of late night house, the subby pads giving it some warmth whilst the synth line worms around head.
A splendid job from Shenoda here, really shining through as a strong talent who we feel is gonna continue to be a mainstay here at Hypercolour.
