Londoner Dale Cornish’s 3rd album for Entr’acte further explores the questions of a/rhythm, space, silence and perception of pulse/percussive gestures initiated with the acclaimed 2012 album, ‘Glacial’. Five tracks toy with our sense of rhythmic anticipation and spatial awareness in oblique, minimalist structures at once recalling the percussive meters of Phork’s experiments for NNA Tapes, Mark Fell, or Nicola Ratti and Seth Nehil for Senufo Editions, and the precise use of space and timbre in records by Mika Vainio’s Ø project or The Automatics Group. Yet for any connotations of cold austerity those comparisons might imply, there’s also real tactility, warmth and humour to Cornish’s five ‘Xeric Patterns’, using sleights of syncopation and malleable shots of atonal noise to suggest a fluid, almost sensual physicality that really hits the spot, especially in the 17 minutes of pensile, pendulous subbass and dub delay in ”Xeric 4′. I’d daresay this is one we’ll be returning to for some time, and should be recommended to any exploratory DJs or insatiable post-techno types.
