Following on from the space themed first release on Leeds’ Slipstone Records label, the second from 18 year old Einerlei explores the notion of Escapism. It comes in the form of a vinyl press with the sleeves being hand screen printed and limited to only 300 copies, with four killer tracks and a rough conceptual storyline. Einerlei is from Manchester, lives in London but speaks German and has a close interest to Baravian music and culture. He is a law student with a great musical mind and opens this EP with a track title that translates as “Are we really free?” It’s a deep and moody affair with spiritual synth patterns rippling over rubber, rolling drums. Harmonies litter this detailed landscape and vocals wash over with bubbling arps and ethereal percussive sounds. It’s a cerebral affair that will captivate any dance floor. Next is Berg. “I took strong influence from the sounds of dub techno,” says the man behind it. “Then I sped it up to match with a pumping techno feel, with a pulsating, bass-heavy kick drums and strong white noise lifts.” This cut is the only track of the three originals with a dominant clap. A heavy arp is introduced in the breakdown, oscillating between octaves and taking centre-stage in a pumping second body-section. Then comes ‘Ensnared’, which poses an elusive answer to the question asked in A1. “The idea of this track was to counterpoise a heavy, uncompromising techno feel (epitomised particularly by the aggressive, bity kick and bass combination) with floaty, melodic arpeggiated ideas. I hoped to provide respite from the heaviness with the use of vocals, which combine with white noise to provide a feeling of being lifted which contrasts with the density of the kick/rumbling sub bass/heavy bass.” Finally returning from the first release it’s ‘Berg’ – Kesper remix, which is a perfect way to end the EP on a very melodic note, with a superb, rolling Reese bassline contrasting nicely with the short sub hits of the original.
