Back in 1992, Juan Atkins made his first appearance on R&S Records’ ambient-minded Apollo offshoot with The True Techno EP, seemingly an attempt to fuse elements of British “intelligent techno” and ambient house into his trademark Detroit futurism sound. This timely reissue, now available in remastered form, shows he got it right. Lead cut “The Passage”, with its’ surprise house-tempo breakbeat, intergalactic electronics and far-sighted synths, is Brown Album-era Orbital with a Motor City cloak. “Mind Changes” has echoes of Atkins’ early work with Cybotron – all hazy vocals, bleep melodies and pulsating bass – while “Vessels In Distress” is surprisingly rough and ready, with densely layered synthesizer arpeggios and otherworldly bleeps smothering dusty machine drum rhythms.
