We are very happy to have Antoine aka Monolithe Noir returning to KODX for the second time this year.
“Modern Nothing” is a very personal EP as all tracks were composed, arranged and mixed in Antoine’s apartment in Brussels. This is not only reflected in obvious things like for example track names- Le Saint Guidon is the name of a neighbourhood Antoine almost lived in. The EP also allows us to be part of Antoine’s research about what he wants to do, feel and make other people feel when listening to his tracks.
Everything in “Modern Nothing” is based on improvisation and Le Saint Guidon is the first track Antoine composed with his modular synth. “It was the moment when I discovered I needed to use some particular tools to have the harsh sound I wanted from now”, Antoine tells us.
He actively decided to keep things rough and not “overmix the whole thing”.
“I also wanted to prevent myself from doing songs (like classical pop songs) with a real structure. I wanted things to be long, even too long for me; without wanting to know what it would feel to listen to those tracks in terms of length.”
We think that Antoine wonderfully managed to stick to this very philosophical approach and can just agree with what his final statement for the EP is:
“I was trying to make it lively, but keeping the tracks like weak glows in the deep dark.”

To form a contrast to the “decided minimalism” Monolithe Noir went for, KODX’s very own Max Dahlhaus layered more levels on and around the base of Le Saint Guidon. With his remix of the track, Max creates a completely different angle to the original piece making it more detailed without losing the primal soul of the track.
