Visionary New Yorker, experiential DJ and club night honcho Victor Calderone continues his flying start to the year with the third release to come crashing out of his Matter+ label. Focusing on uncompromising, true techno sounds with a penchant for the arresting, the Matter+ releases stick to their linear format of dance floor bombs, heavy on machinist groove and heavy hitting clout and for release number 3 comes Nikola Gala with the Bias EP.

Previous releases have graced free range, Anemone, Rekids and no less than 30 labels along his career path, Nikola is a seasoned producer who shares common ground with grand sensei Victor – it’s with this knowledge of the room, the speakers and the dance floor that brings the Greek producer and DJ to the Matter+ stable.

Proceedings begin with Bias.28 – proud in it’s one sided approach to music, this crunching, hissing and thumping techno track doesn’t deviate too much from its plain, with each second beat inflicted with a major chord twitch, giving the driving feel of the tune a little more groove.

On the flip side, Nikola’s Bias.29 goes for a classic early ‘90s approach – a la Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills – proffering high tempos, hypnotic, one hit melodies and an unrelenting kick drum that creates a bottomless, forthright groove as 808 claps and chopped and screwed vocals help to push the sound forward.

Another triumphant notch in the bed post of Nikola Gala – and a worthy addition to the church of Matter+.
