Salento, Italy born artist Luciano Esse has been heavily involved in electronic music since the early nineties initially starting in Italy’s thriving club scene before a relocation to London saw him pick up regular shows at fabric and later residencies in Ibiza and of course his home turf Italy. Over the year Esse’s released a string of material via reputed imprints such as Safari Electronique, Leftroom, Tenax and Out- Er, here we see him join the roster of Alex Dolby’s Affekt Recordings.
Title track ‘Night Shift’ opens the release and sees Luciano deliver an earth-shattering slice of techno with pulsating low end tones, a thundering kick drum and lo-fi synth shots. Label head Alex Dolby steps up to remix ‘Night Shift’ next and brings an even tougher edge to things via mind bending synth blips, distorted rhythms and swirling background echoes.
Up next is the original mix of ‘Phantasm’ which delves into deeper territories fusing ghostly atmospherics, growling low end tones and spoken world vocal murmurs alongside Esse’s signature raw drum style. Italy’s MTD gives ‘Phantasm’ a Tool style rework next and lays the focus on driving percussion, tension building drones and a vacillating bass movement. Lastly to close the package is the third original from Luciano entitled ‘One Gun’ which shapes up the release with menacing acid licks, dubbed out drums and spiralling sub hits throughout.
