Part of the wealth of Central American talent filtering into the underground dance community, Hot TuneiK continues to rise the to the upper echelons of the scene with his unique sonic identity. Now making his Proton Music debut, the twin-track “Revival” commands attention.
Based in the north-western municipality of the sprawling Mexico City, Diego Carr has risen out of the Mexican heat to become a highly respected and sought-after part of the global underground dance scene through his Hot TuneiK soubriquet. A regular across the clubs of his home city, Carr has carved out a sizeable niche with his impressive brand of tech and deep house with a sprinkling of progressive thrown in for good measure. Furthermore, with his Hookah cub nights and record label, the Hot TuneiK name continues to reverberate across the clubs of Mexico with guest appearances from such leading lights as Kastis Torrau, Donatello and Madloch.
A fledgling production career that began in April 2012 with a debut release on House Tribe Records has subsequently blossomed into a plethora of appearances on some of the finest modern labels that equates to over a double century of production credits to date. Thus, Balkan Connection, Soundteller and 76 Recordings have all been responsible for furthering the Hot TuneiK name with a compelling blend of remix and original production material.
A regular on Particles since July 2015’s debut remixing Omar El Gamal, October 2017’s “Erase and Rewind” EP has been a notable highlight as have remixes of Idham and Roger Martinez earlier in the year. Moreover, a remix of Andre Sobota at the back end of the year marked an impressive debut on Proton Music as we welcome back Hot TuneiK and his inspired “Revival” EP.
The opener sees “Memories” scintillate with beautifully sculpted percussive rhythms while a collage of melodic textures weaves their way across the stereo spectrum in easy fashion. Built upon a seismic bass groove that rumbles in the chest cavity, “Memories” evolves beautifully as Vangelis inspired strings provides a soundtrack that would grace any Ridley Scott science fiction epic, coupled with its dramatic club groove.
The title track retains the strong rhythmic foundations of its predecessor as a rippling arpeggio emerges drenched in delay and reverb. Twinkling across the mid-range, a glorious bass-led groove provides an aural anchor for free-flowing melodies to coruscate elegantly across the near-twelve-minute offering. Rising and falling with ease throughout and reaching a head-shaking zenith in the third movement, “Revival” is a masterpiece of understated sonic artistry.
