Deep in the Black Forest, Mio and His Flute has begun to cause a stir with his innovate music. Returning to Particles, he creates a feast for a “Barbecue on the Moon” with remixes from Turkey and Argentina.

Making his debut on WAYU Records with the stunning “Responsibilime” EP in February 2018 the Freiburg resident has had a breakthrough year, after a Particles remix for Rudy in June followed by an appearance on the best-selling Visceral compilation series in July. “Barbecue on the Moon” opens with the bass-heavy “Woodwatch” that revels in a squelching low-end groove that anchors effortlessly to ticking hi-hat and dominant kick. A glorious organic flute melody makes its presence felt, hovering across the third movement in freeform fashion before the title track enters the fray with its ethnic percussive cadence and intricate melodic motifs. With smooth glissando phrasing creating a languid floating effect combined with copious amounts of reverb, the track is aptly titled. “Salo Panto” continues the focus on rich melodic interplay that is a staple of Mio’s work as hypnotic arpeggios and sustained pads combine with strong off-beat claps and hi-ha pattern. Sliding riffs and rippling sequences meld across the third movement with Mio and His Flute creating a distinctive and unique sonic picture.

Istanbul resident, Erdi Irmak, needs no introduction to the Particles faithful. Responsible for a plethora of original music since a debut remixing Kobana and Mario Hatchet in May 2013, the Turkish star has produced moments to remember, not least in his landmark “You’re Either Guilty or Not Guilty” full-length album in August 2014. December 2017’s “Zero” EP brought the year to a close with a bang and Erdi Irmak has lost none of his craft and quality as he returns to Particles with another outstanding remix. Reimagining “Woodwatch”, Irmak, creates a rich, low-slung groove that is the perfect vehicle for gently pulsating pads to sway across the eight-minute piece. Using Mio and His Flute’s intricate melodic motifs to wonderful effect, the combination of hypnotic groove juxtaposed against flowing melodic lines and intelligent additional production material has created another moment to savour from Erdi Irmak.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Warren, Digweed and fellow countryman Hernan Cattaneo, Marcelo Paladini’s performances at the clubs of his Mar del Plata home have provided the perfect grounding for a production career that has seen him feature on some the underground dance scene’s leading imprints. A regular on Balkan Connection Soundteller and Superordinate Music, Paladini’s remix of Zankee Gulati’s “Breathe” in May 2018 witnessed a strong Particles debut as he now returns to the label to rework Mio and His Flute. “Taking on “Salo Panto”, Paladini’s interpretation revels in dynamic percussive groove and syncopated bass pattern that supply the perfect vehicle for a series of shimmering synth lines to filter into sonic range. A stepped arpeggio sequence modulates and pans the stereo spectrum as intelligent use of Mio’s original components create a sublime new interpretation.

Three new tracks and a pair of remixes from Erdi Irmak and Marcelo Paladini have ensured the fire is well and truly lit for Mio and His Flute’s “Barbecue on the Moon”.
