Since the early 00’s Alan Fitzpatrick has been a celebrated name in the Techno scene. Once a Drumcode regular, Alan has forged his own series of labels over the years including Brain Damage Recordings, Whistleblower Records and 8 Sided Dice but his real success seems to be coming from his 2016 founded We Are The Brave label. Names like Skream, Darius Syrossian, Harvey McKay, Boxia and Ronnie Spiteri have all joined the We Are The Brave family and what better way to start 2019 than the label head getting his hands dirty.
This new EP is a mammoth seven tracks with Alan telling us “I’m not hugely into the traditional idea of making an album anymore but I felt like it was time to do something a bit different for my label. I sat on these tracks for a while and realised they work really well together and make a strong, statement EP. I chose to include seven tracks because I have so much music to share at the minute and it’s a shame to make people wait so long for releases.”
Opening with the title-track, the EP kicks off with a spiritual vibe, a spoken message is coupled with low end splutters before giving way to a stomping Techno 4/4, full of lively percussion and steady kicks. Next is ‘Stand Up’ with is bright synth melodies that are coupled with lighter mischievous lines. Pumped full of energy, this is our favourite. ‘Ego’ is a brooding journey of ethereal synths and juxtaposed bass splutters. ‘All Hope Fades’ is a Techno weapon with its attacking drum vibe that’s full of kinetic energy whilst still been touched by Fitzpatrick’s warm synth melodies. ‘Dead Beat Exile’ is Alan returning to his love of Fantazia-type sounds, creating big Acid 303 lines that will cause floors to erupt before sliding into a masterful, old school breakdown. Rounding off the EP is ‘Toasted Pitta’. This enigmatic, warm sound plays a wonderful adieu to the listener as rousing drum sequences couple with organ-type high strings and muted synth melodies.
Overall this is a very impressive EP from Alan to start the year, not many can release seven track EP’s that don’t include any filler. Bravo, sir.
