Ilana Bryne’s deep grooves find their home with her debut EP on Naive. Bryne’s Low Earth Orbit offers nods to her experience of dance music history as a conversation between Chicago and London. Ruffneck breaks, swinging garage drums, and sub-bass grooves mix with bumping house kicks, smooth chords, and melancholy synths.
Opener “Dub Box Medicine” comes in hard with the breakbeats and bass for the dance floor but also invokes an inspirational rush of melody and soundclash samples: “You see this tune, If you have a problem in life, listen to this”. “Feelin’ Myself”’ gives us soft electric keys drifting beautifully over chunky, driving drums, when all of a sudden bubbling acid and a Blade Runner-esque synth line widens eyes and darkens the mood.
“Mmm Mmm Mmm” brings out Bryne’s love for the sound of late-90s London with shuffling garage percussion and nocturnal chords, creating a groove so natural it could last forever. The track gets an intriguing rework from Toronto’s Ciel: she tunes “Mmm Mmm Mmm” into a different frequency with squelchy sounds, a broken bassline and bouncing breaks, giving it a fresh perspective.
