Killawatt’s ‘Sickofrantic’ marks the release of his first solo EP in nearly two years. The intense and inherently claustrophobic textures and dynamics were conceptualised amid the pandemic, reflecting his anxieties during a prolonged shielding period due to illness.
The title track ‘Sickofrantic’ was tailored for the warehouse, a place that seemed alien at the time. Thundering kicks, swirling crunched drum textures, and piercing, nail-biting signals cut straight to the anxiety.
The broken ‘Fugue Status’ begins with anthemic anticipation descending into a wonky, off-kilter bassline overlain with washed-out distant synth work.
The third, ‘Yuza Riddim’ is a return to Killawatt’s signature tribal broken drum work with looping cut vocals, tense risers, binaural hats, and breathless panic.
‘Black Air (22VIP)’ is a rework of the title track from his first techno release on Osiris. Its instantly recognisable hook builds into a voluptuous, rolling 4/4 drum track letting the central theme speak for itself and providing the perfect set-opener.//
