Linear System makes his Blank Code debut with the five-track Eigenstates EP (BCRLTD012). This marks the 12th release in the Blank Code limited series which plays with deeper, yet still active, tracks with the freedom to explore the more speculative realms of techno. Fresh off recent releases this year on Illegal Alien Records from Mexico, Marco Bailey’s Belgian label Materia, and a continuation of his Space Explorations releases on Edit Select, Linear System continues his advance into the depths of modern techno.

The three original tracks on the Eigenstates EP mimic the excursion from Earth’s atmosphere through deep space–ages of travel compressed into just under nineteen minutes of navigation through the cosmos.

“Quarks” launches the journey with a slow-burning, haunting drone that creeps and sways in frequency, rippling the listener through the stratosphere as they brace for the route ahead. Textures are added through aquatic-sounding accents drifting through the ether which can only equate to elementary particles bouncing off one another as the immense friction is gathered during liftoff.

The release continues with “Beam Splitters.” The track is carried by a thumping low kick and resonates repeated, swelling beams of light split into a transmission calling out to space. This conveyance of sounds leads you to wonder if you’ve fallen off course and collapsed into a black hole. The low end is slowly filtered out and you feel completely lost until just as quickly the track returns in force and sets you on a clear path to your destination.

The third and title track “Eigenstates” confirms you have reached the interstellar dimensions of deep space. Your momentum is still quantified by the consistent deep rhythm, but the atmosphere has melted away in a scopious array of sounds circling your trajectory.

The three original tracks are supported with two remixes, the first hailing from L.A.-based Modularz label boss Developer. His rendition of “Quarks” takes a much more immediate stance. He ticks up the bpm, adds repeating sample fragments into a rhythmic form, layers in a humanistic vocal snippet, and manipulates sonic elements into a strange organ sound that transmutes “Quarks” straight into a circus-themed warehouse rave.

Myyr rounds out the release with a more subterranean and melodic interpretation of “Beam Splitters.” This remix features a soundscape swirling around the listener’s head similar to tones bouncing off metal pipes while traveling through an underground concrete tunnel. He introduces a beaming, yet melancholic resonating chord that culminates during the short breakdown–offering a glimmer of optimism amidst this brooding selection of sounds.
