For DJs into the darker side of club music Curses Next Wave Acid Punx series has been a boon, rediscovering and refreshing classics that straddle the boundaries of house, EBM, techno and more. Next up in the series is sample-heavy 1988 cut Not Leaving Without Jerry by Belgian duo Mark Borgions & Jo Lijnen aka Philadelphia Five. Originally produced by Luc Van Acker, (better known for his work with the likes of Front 242, Ministry and Revolting Cocks), the track has been handed over to NYC producer Andi, who ups the tempo and hones in on the rhythm section, putting the focus on the staccato drums and throbbing bass line the focal point now and creating a perfect soundtrack for sweat lashed bodies. Samples have always been integral to the conceptual aspect of my productions because of this track, explains Andi. Its cinematic progression, the slow and steady build, and bubbling tension taught me how placement of vocal samples can create a rousing narrative. Sexual yet eerie, the eight-minute-long track successfully draws the listener into a world of conflict and confusion: Darling, I want to fuck you any way I damn please is an unforgettable line that is placed at the apex. It is a release of the pressure, a twist to the plot… and oh-so satisfying.
