Behind the Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) : Release Notes
David Castellani unveils fast, spacey, lyrical Saboteur 2-track EP featuring noir-poet Brittney Vandal on his Noetic imprint. Previous support inc. Mixmag, DJ Mag, BCCO, BBC Radio 1, Attack Magazine, Beatportal, KEYI, Music Radar, Coeval Mag, Raheem Radio, Slam Radio Techno artist, technology maestro, modular synthesist, live artist, multi-instrumentalist DJ/Producer David Castellani – oh yes, and owner and creative driver at Anti-Kulture Modular – has new 2-track EP Saboteur out April 18th on his own widely respected Noetic imprint. Noetic, formed in 2021, has attracted remixers of the calibre of Etapp Kyle, Redshape, Matrixxman, Voiski, and most recently, Truncate, on Castellanis Immutable EP, his 11 th release on Noetic. Now newly based in Lisbon, the Italian-born producer bade farewell to previous home LA with Novembers hugely lauded Noetic Label Showcase, a near sell-out event alongside Ken Ishii, DJ Hyperactive b2b Hiroko Yamamura & Anastasia. Saboteur Track One: Forgive Me creates a spacey soundscape, a fast techno galloping beat with random hoover doppler notes swooshing past like rogue asteroids and melodic stabs, as vocalist/poet/muse Brittney Vandal speaks her lyrics in two weighty, echoing quatrains bridged by double drum beats, chattering percussion and jingling hi-hats. Saboteur Track Two: Blame Me as the philosophical obverse to Forgive Me is equally fast, with breaksy beats, and Brittneys vocal chopped, pulsing and distorted coming through like far distant radio waves across outer space, with tuneful synth notes and snatches of melody tantalisingly half heard, bringing an ethereal vibe to earthy drums. Castellani has shared decks with Nastia, DJ Hyperactive, Ken Ishii, Mark Broom, Dense & Pika, Vril, and lately, Rødhåd, and Luke Slater. Last year, he played an intimate live set at the highly regarded art space What Is Happening Gallery, Amsterdam. Previous highlights include a special 360-degree audio-visual LA performance with Colin Benders and ONYVAA; playing Chicagos ARC Music Festival; and releasing his collaborative project Hysteria Dichotic with AnnMarie Arcuri, combining techno, dance, modular synthesis and film, Castellani being also a graphic designer/visual artist. A dedicated and qualified educator, he ran a sold-out ADE Lab workshop on Modular Synthesis last October. Says Castellani of the EP: It speaks of how we relate to our artistic muses and in reflection, ourselves, how inspiration can come from pain and the exhaustion of our creative fuel. How we wish to love and nurture the important things in life – but also how losing them, and how we exploit and destroy them in the simultaneous expressiveness of our art, consumes the creator. Saboteur is out March 9 th on Noetic. Smart link to follow.
