Andrea Mattioli Artist Bio

Andrea Mattioli (Faenza, October 15, 1611 , baptismal date – Mantua, October 2, 1679) was an Italian composer and presbyter.

He became cantor of the metropolitan chapter of the cathedral of Faenza at the age of 16. Ordained a priest, he still worked as a musician. In 1642 he obtained the position of mansionary and chapel master of the Imola Cathedral. In 1650 he became choirmaster at the Accademia dello Spirito Santo in Ferrara , almost entirely governed by the Marquis Cornelio Bentivoglio who supplemented Mattioli’s salary with the usufruct of land and the income of a parish. At the end of 1654disagreements of an economic nature arose between Mattioli and the Bentivoglio, and the musician was forced to leave Ferrara. In January 1656 he went to Mantua, thanks to the recommendation of the bishop of Ferrara, Carlo Pio di Savoia junior , and remained there until his death as master of the Gonzaga chapel.
