Derrick Green Artist Bio

Derrick Green (born January 20, 1971) is the vocalist for the heavy metal band Sepultura, whom he joined after the departure of their previous vocalist Max Cavalera in 1997.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Derrick was a singer for thrash metal/hardcore band Outface (with guitarist Charlie Gerriga of CIV, and Frank Cavanagh of Prong and Filter among others), Krop Acid and several other hardcore bands, the last of which prior to joining Sepultura was Alpha Jerk. Outside of his main work fronting Sepultura, he has also performed guest vocals on Integrity’s Integrity 2000 album on the track Never Surrender and on Biohazard’s Uncivilization on the song Trap (alongside fellow Sepultura member Andreas Kisser).

In 2008 he joined the side-project Musica Diablo, a crossover thrash metal band with members of Nitrominds, Ação Direta and Dead Fish. On May 28th 2010, the band released their debut self-titled album, Musica Diablo.

Since Green joined Sepultura, the band hasn’t had as much success, but over the years have gained critical acclaim for each subsequent album. Allmusic said about the singer: “There was a time when the idea of Sepultura recording without Max Cavalera seemed unthinkable; Cavalera played a vital role on pre-Green albums such as 1991’s Arise and 1993’s Chaos A.D. But the incendiary Green turned out to be a fine replacement.”

Derrick is a vegetarian and has been for the past 23 years. He made this publicly clear in a PETA video interview regarding Sepultura’s 2006 video of their song “Convicted in Life”. Derrick stated in the interview that the subject of this video is that some kind of “karma” is inflicted on those that damage the environment and its wildlife.

The extremely graphic video depicts how he describes a “sort of hell” where pig slaughterers and chicken harvesters are forced to suffer for their actions in their past life, with also very large and dramatically graphic references to the Dark Wood of Error and the first parts of Dante’s Inferno concluding onto Dante XXI.
