Divest Artist Bio
Fear Know Music artist’s Divest are a product of the legendary musical breeding ground that is Woodstock, NY. In the spirit and tradition of the region’s roots in revolutionary music, the band has dedicated itself to a life path of rock dedication. Divest is part of a regional movement, stemming from the same Upstate NY scene that gave the world Coheed and Cambria, AnaDivine and AutoPilot Off . All of these groups, including Divest, have worked hard to perfect their unique and ground breaking sounds.
Formed in 2002, Divest is nonetheless the result of years of work in the underground. The members of Divest have spent a decade in their scene in various groups, booking and promoting shows and putting out zines D.I.Y. style. After several incarnations (one of which featured Josh Eppard of Coheed fame), the band found their voice together and a solid line-up with Guitarists Kurt Brown and Dave Parker, Bassist Mike McCoy, Drummer Dave Bodie and Vocalist Morgan Evans. The modern rock n’ roll audience has developed a sophisticated ear for various shades of heavy music, from the introspective to the outwardly aggressive. As such, listeners are waiting anxiously for a band to come along that can deliver the entire spectrum of contemporary heavy music in one package. That’s where Divest comes in.“It’s not like it used to be, where you would never see metal, hard core and melodic elements combined,” says singer Morgan Evans. “It is healthier to open minds with experimentation because everyone can come together. It’s time to try new combinations.”
With this fearless approach to planting creative seeds in the scene, it is fitting that Divest has found a home with Fear Know Music, the new label founded by Dr.Know of the legendary Bad Brains. The Brains were experimental from the get go, laying down the foundation for creative fusion of styles in hard-core and alternative music.
Divest’s efforts and skill rewarded them even before they were even signed with shows alongside Boysetsfire, Codeseven, Coheed and Cambria, Bloodlet, Blank Theory, Hope Conspiracy, Red Tape, Murphys Law, and the Bad Brains to name a few.
Guitarists Dave Parker and Kurt Brown interweave parts like some new language, a connection built from years of collaboration and friendship. Brown’s love for old metal somehow merged with Parker’s punk and pop mind to help shape the Divest sound. Parker is also known for his work recording countless local bands, helping punk groups get their start (and even some hip hop like Weerd Science, and Bobby Delicious).
Drummer Dave Bodie, the newest member, comes to the band after a year spent at the NYC Drummer’s Collective, with chops and timing that are right up there with the best drummers in rock (Listen to “And I” for proof!). Dave is actually the original drummer, back for seconds in the wake of ex-members Josh Eppard from Coheed and Zac Shaw from Sonicproduct.net. Bassist Mike McCoy comes to the band from NJ, bringing along steady low-end theory, an engineering ear, a wise ass attitude and a smoggy haze of ganja. He joined the band in 2001, following the departure of original bassist (and 6 year Shabutie/Coheed drummer) Nate Kelley.
Singer Morgan Y. Evans is well known for his flailing on stage mayhem, as well as his intensely personal and worldly lyrics, which often deal with social and interpersonal issues (or screwing). All this combined with his ten years of independently booking shows and studying music lend weight to the words from the stage that most bands just can’t offer.
With an ambitious vision and infinite potential, the members of Divest would like to welcome you to their sound. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
