Djanan Turan Artist Bio

Djanan started performing at the age of 15 with her band in their home town Adana, covering the songs they loved listening to. By age 18, her musical journey took her to Istanbul where she performed in clubs, bars and festivals for 5 years. She then moved to London. She fell in love with London when she came for a 3 day visit as a tourist in 2001 and decided to move there simply to be a part of the music scene. Within the first 6 months, she started collaborating and writing songs with different musicians and bands such as Oojami, Group Bazaar, Viktor Mastoridis, and more. At this time she was also singing jazz and pop covers in and outside of London. She has performed in major London venues like Notting Hill Arts Club, Islington Carling Academy, Electrowerkz, Albany, and Shunt Vaultz. She also featured in the documentary A Portrait of London™, directed by Mike Figgis for The London Film Festival 2006. Djanan writes her songs in both English and Turkish. She has been ultimately experimenting for years with different styles and sounds, Djanan is currently recording her new songs with Tansay Omar of Natural Rhythm Recordings, as well as collaborating with different bands and producers both performing live and songwriting. She believes that the different musical journeys she has taken so far have helped her in discovering how to give personality to her songs, in a way that she will feel close to them. Her songs reflect the challenge she has taken, of bringing in all her influences from Turkish wailings to expressive theatrical cabaret, without restricting her inspiration in any particular genre. Her music somehow comes together and makes sense under a unique passion and melodical, lyrical expression. Read more on Last.fm.
