Farthest South Artist Bio
The Farthest South is a term coined by the explorers of the early 20th century which describes the southernmost point one can reach. Over the years, the Farthest South was the goal of the bravest and most courageous. Sir Shackleton with his team from Britain and the Norwegian Amundsen are but two of the famous adventurers who attempted to find the Farthest South.
The most important significance of the term is that it doesn’t speak of a static place, but rather a point of ever shifting location. Every time someone manages to go farther, that’s where the new Farthest South is. This is the idea that lies at the core of the band as a musical entity – the neverending journey of self discovery, in search of that elusive place, always on the move.
Farthest South is an Israeli band (or collective) which was created by chance with the purpose of journeying to the individual and collective Farthest South of its members. The group was formed in August 2011 by three musicians who were previously unacquainted with one another and has been evolving ever since through a process of trial and error.
Barry Berko (35) has been playing for years in various improvisational groups. Yair Etziony (37) is one of the pioneers of the Israeli Glitch scene and an artist of international renown. Yair Yona (32) is the former general manager and artistic director of Anova Records and has released two highly acclaimed solo albums in the USA.
The three come from different musical backgrounds and the connection between them is not necessarily based on a specific sound or musical style, but rather on love, and their need to find within themselves the ability to create music of authenticity which might enable the listener to join them on a trip into their collective subconscious. When at their best, with every session, performance and practice Farthest South succeed in creating a whole new entity that is greater than the sum of all its parts. They see the process as trying to tap into a metaphysical Well from which they are sometimes allowed to drink and share its water with the listener.
Fans of groups like Supersilent, Faust, Cluster, Sonic Youth, David Lynch soundtracks (Angelo Badalamenti) and Fire! will most certainly find “Omens & Talismans” a welcome addition to their collection. Call it Jazz, Avantgarde, Kraut, Kosmische noise or whatever – we call it Explorecore.
