Speed Dealer Moms Artist Bio
An acid collaboration between Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares) and John Frusciante, sometimes joined in by Chris McDonald, who’s otherwise busy making custom analog synthesizers. Eventually, only two tracks surfaced from their numerous sessions over the course of four years, on the Speed Dealer Moms EP, released through Planet Mu in December 2010; as a digital download and limited-edition 10″ vinyl single.

Frusciante has stated on many occasions before that he was a fan of Venetian Snares. Photos of “2008 Modular Jam At Casa Cyrusrex” featuring various experimental, hip-hop and industrial musicians have been uploaded on the Internet in June 2008, featuring the two future Moms amongst others. Later in the year, according to various sources, John Frusciante went to Winnipeg for a couple of recording sessions with Funk. It is supposed that circa eight hours of music came out of these sessions already; but the project was kept low-profile.
Speed Dealer Moms were announced as Bangface Weekender ’09 act early in January; as the festival’s highlight. Frusciante himself has not said anything about this project, other than vaguely mentioning that he’d be “doing a show but that it will be different” in an interview with the French magazine Guitarist & Bass. This explanation lost on its secrecy as Frusciante’s interview was published two months after Speed Dealer Moms’ live performance was announced.
On the other hand, Aaron Funk talked about the project in the online edition of Winnipeg sun. “People seem to be making a huge deal out of it,” says Funk, admitting he’s not keen on the fuss. “I feel kind of weird about it. I am kind of concerned about having to deal with people who just want to check us out because of John’s brand name.”
The performance-to-come was expected by many. Sadly, due to technical difficulties and no valid equipment to replace their own, the band’s performance was cancelled literally a couple of minutes before it was supposed to take place on the last day of the festival. They were then scheduled to perform at the Bang Fest 2009, but the entire festival eventually got cancelled due to complaints from residents of the area where it was supposed to be held.
In a blog entry in July 2012, John Frusciante confirmed that Speed Dealer Moms continue to exist. And in 2021, SDM released a new EP. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
